IIn the UK, the smoking ban in 'public places' is set to be the norm from summer 2007 although some areas are considering introducing the law earlier.
The Smoking ban represents a major change and challenge for licensed outlets that have a significant percentage of customers that smoke. The effect is, however, much more complex than has been reported.
Fewer people are now visiting pubs/clubs as the reported average is down approximately 13% over the last 4 years. This combined with the smoking ban will mean outlets have to compete harder to attract the same level of trade.
There maybe an opportunity for licensed premises to profit from the ban by investing in your outdoor area. However first and foremost it is important to retain your smoking customers by providing a suitable area for them to smoke. There is a need to consider where an area can be created practically within the boundary of your premises and license conditions along with how comfortable you would like your customers to be when smoking.
Where do you start and what is allowable under the ban?
What is the solution and will not require planning permission?
